"Development and North East India is seen to be opposite to each other. One of the strategic regions of India with eight vibrant states with each having distinct social, cultural, economic indicators, the region needs fruits of development along with rest of the country. It is high time that political representatives, policy framers, policy executioners, corporate entities and development experts focus on increasing development requirements in the region. We at North East Development Foundation are making a small efforts in enabling development initiatives in the region across diverse sectors. We urge various stakeholders to join us in these efforts to enable development reaching the communities at the grassroots in the distant lands of North East India."

eMSME Seminar Concluded


The  ‘eMSME: Internet for MSMEs’ Educational Seminar concluded on 26th May at the NEDFi Auditorium, NEDFi House, Guwahati. Time: 10AM-2.30PM. The event was organized by New Delhi based Digital Empowerment Foundation (www.defindia.net) and North East Development Foundation (www.nedfindia.org). The programme was supported by Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (Govt. of India) and Verisign (Global . North East Small Scale Industries Association (NESSIA) was event partner. On this occasion 10 commerce sites of 10 enterprises were launched apart from few organizational sites. This included five clusters from IIE and the site of Assam Small Scale Industries Association (ASIDC). The site of North East Small Scale Industries Association (NESSIA) was also launched on this occasion.

SCHOLL Research Conclave & Award Evening Concluded

The SCHOLL Research Conclave & Award Evening concluded on February 11, 2011 at Hotel Brahmaputra Ashok, Guwahati. The Conclave had a special session deliberation on  'Promoting Research Excellence in Development & Governance in North East'. The SCHOLL Award Evening felicitated and recognised the winners of 2010 SCHOLL Research Challenge Competition. The winners and special mentions were feted with cash prize, medal and certificate. The evening  also felicitated the Honourable Jury members who were involved in evaluating the nomination papers & case studies.

ICT Workshop & Training for NGOs Conducted in Nagaland
August 5-6, 2010, Kohima (Nagaland): A two days workshop-training-capacity building programme was conducted in Kohima in web and Internet technology under the 'eNGO' National programme. The programme was a hands on training for NGO resource persons on methods and applications to development, manage own website platforms, and on content management on regular basis. The event was inaugurated by Mr. Alemtemshi Jamir, Additional Chief Secretary & Development Commissioner, Govt. of Nagaland. The event was concluded in the presence of Mr. K T Sukhalu, Secretary, Information Technology & Communications, Govt. of Nagaland. eNorth East 2010 Multistakeholder Dialogue

North East Development Foundation, Digital Empowerment Foundation, Good Governance and National Internet Exchange of India - Department of Information Technology, Govt. of India organised a one day multistakeholder dialogue-consultation 'eNorth East 2010' on role of Information Communication & Internet Technology in North East India. The dialogue was held on May 28, 2010 in Hotel Brahmaputra Ashok, Guwahati.
eNorth East is a multi-stakeholder dialogue forum to deliberate on key aspects of Information Communication Technology (ICT) for Development in North East India.    It is a forum for Government-Industry-Civil Society and Academia stakeholders to enter into dialogue in deliberating on governance and development challenges in the region and finding solutions through ICTs and Internet Technology.

North East India National Seminar-cum-Consultation


North East Development Foundation, North Eastern Council & North East Centre for Research & Development (IGNOU),  organised a day long deliberation and consultation on Oct 30, 2009 at Scope Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. In his Chief Guest Speech, Mr. U K Sangma, Secretary, North Eastern Council stressed on the essential linkage between development and governance in NER. ‘Development and governance cannot be anti-thetical. Various stakeholders have to come together to ensure a sound development and governance framework in NER,” He was of the view that role of the community as a stakeholder is important to ensure that development funds are properly utilized for sustainable outcome.

Handloom Cluster Development Programme (HCDP)

This is one of the flagship project interventions of North East Development Foundation (NEDF) being implemented in Village Noapara in Kamrup District of Assam. The project comes under NEDF’s Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Development Unit. The Noapara HCDP is serving 140 village women in SHG Mode in developing economic and livelihood capacity building through handloom weaving.

‘Need for a proper marketing strategy’

Weavers Service Centres are specialized centres having its presence in various parts of India serving the handloom communities. Set up under Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, the Weavers Service Centre (WSC) in Guwahati was set up in 1978 as the Eastern Zonal Centre catering to needs of North East India, Bihar, Orissa and West Bengal. The Guwahati WSC was set up to serve Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. The mandate of the WSC is to facilitate promotion, development and scaling up of the decentralized handloom sector. In a conversation with 'Development- North East' (DNE) team, Mr. S.P. Singh, Director, Weavers Service Centre, Eastern Zone (including North East India) talks about the prevailing handloom and weaving scenario in North East India.

CIRC launched in Dimoria Block in Kamrup District















A Community Information Resource Centre (CIRC) was launched in Dimorial block (in Digaru Panchayat) in Kamrup District of Assam. The CIRC is a national programme of Digital Empowerment Foundation & Intel Foundation. North East Development Foundation is the facilitating partner in implementing this programme. The CIRC Assam was launched in July 4th, 2009.

eNGO Workshop in Meghalaya















A one day introductory workshop on the national e-NGO programme was concluded on June 5, 2009 in State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD), Meghalaya campus at Nongsder. The eNGO programme is facilitating skill development and capacity building of NGOs/CSOs/SHGs using Information Communication Technology through creation of free websites and hands on training on ICT. The programme is an initiative of New Delhi based Digital Empowerment Foundation with support from National Internet Exchange of India and facilitated by North East Development Foundation, New Delhi. UN Solution exchange is the knowledge partner.

Sikkim ranked 2nd in implementation of MGNREGA

MGNREGA has completed four years of implementation in Sikkim and the performance has been improving each year. In a performance evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, in the Performance Review Committee meeting held in Delhi on July 16, Sikkim was ranked second after Tripura in achieving the most important outcome – providing 100 days in a financial year to the rural people, informed a release issued today.

NESO seeks comprehensive policy for NE

The North East Students’ Organization (NESO) intimated the Union Government of a ‘peaceful but intense’ agitation unless it came out with a comprehensive policy to solve the burning issues of the region.  The charter of resolutions that the NESO adopted in its last general council meeting includes demand for the formation of a Special Education Council for the North East,  declaration of the NE as a special economic and employment zone, besides declaring a separate time zone for the region.
